Fairy tales aren’t just for children. In Tale of Tales, three not-so-conventional stories combine for an experience that dances a fine line between magical and the macabre. The fanciful tales first appeared in Giambattista Basile’s famous collection of fables, Pentamerone, alongside versions of popular tales including Cinderella, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty.
Nearly four centuries after their inception, celebrated director Matteo Garrone perfectly adapts the drama and supernatural elements of Basile’s tales for the big screen. Initially debuting exclusively on DIRECTV CINEMA, Tale of Tales promises to delight with enchanting imagery and compelling performances across three sensational stories.
Tale one takes the audience into the kingdom of Darkwood where the queen (Salma Hayek) is willing to sacrifice it all, including her king (John C. Reilly), to conceive a child and revel in the pure affection she assumes it will give her. Tale two furthers the notion of selfishness and infatuation when the king of Highmountain (Toby Jones) becomes more obsessed with a giant flea than the well-being of his daughter, whom he marries off to a violent ogre. The final tale explores the theme of lust’s consequences when the king of Stronghold (Vincent Cassel) is compelled to marry a woman who is drastically different than she appears to be.
Tale of Tales debuted on DIRECTV CINEMA a full month before it was released in theaters. Though now showing in select theaters, Tale of Tales is still available for 48-hour rental on DIRECTV CINEMA.1 The film is featured in HD/1080p formatting, the only way you’ll want to experience each tale’s artistic imagery.
