DIRECTV’s BKB VR App Takes You Ringside
DIRECTV has become the newest contender in virtual reality sports by launching a mobile app that puts the viewer ringside at a high-stakes prizefight.
DIRECTV introduced the Big Knockout Boxing Virtual Reality (BKB VR) app on Oct. 8. The new app uses video footage from an actual BKB event to simulate the experience of being there as the punches fly.
To create this immersive, 360-degree virtual world, BKB VR focuses on the most exciting moments from the BKB 3 event held June 27 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The user is granted the perspective of a fan in the crowd — witnessing the jabs, counterpunches and knockdowns captured by a state-of-the-art five-camera system.
How to Use the DIRECTV BKB VR App
- Devices — Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition and Cardboard (Android and iOS) headsets
- Download the App — Google Play, Apple App Stores and Oculus™ Store
- Special Features — Highlight selection and close-up camera feeds available with Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition
- Experience It Online — Samsung Milk VR, a premium virtual reality service
Enhancing DIRECTV Sports Experiences
An executive from DIRECTV, now part of the AT&T family, indicated that BKB VR could represent the next generation of DIRECTV apps.
Jon Molod, vice president of DIRECTV’s Digital Entertainment Products Group, said in a press release: “We believe that much of VR’s growth will be mobile driven. As the technology evolves, we hope to find new ways to use VR to enhance not just BKB but all sports experiences.”
Big Knockout Boxing is a special brand of combat sport developed by DIRECTV for its exclusive AUDIENCE™ network. Bouts take place inside a circular ring without ropes or corners. BKB combatants include traditionally trained boxers as well as fighters with experience in mixed martial arts.
