DIRECTV Yaveo™ Brings Latino Programming to Online Audiences
DIRECTV has introduced an online video service catering to Latino viewers in the United States, with no satellite TV subscription or contract required.
The service is called Yaveo, a reference to the Spanish phrase for “I see.” Yaveo uses an OTT (over-the-top) platform to stream content through the Internet. It’s available only in the U.S. and requires a high-speed Internet connection.
The “soft launch” begun on Dec. 22 will deliver the Spanish-language service on PCs, Macs and Android devices, but availability will soon expand to devices including iPhone, iPad and Xbox 360. The service costs $7.99 per month, with the first month free.
What Can You Watch on Yaveo?
Programming choices on Yaveo include On Demand movies, sports, children’s shows, telenovelas, documentaries and music. The current lineup of content providers includes:
- Univision networks
- beIN Sports en Español
- ¡Hola! TV
- Nick en Español
Customers can stream Yaveo programming on as many as two devices simultaneously. They can also start watching on one device and continue on another.
DIRECTV Enters the World of OTT
“Yaveo gets DIRECTV into the OTT business and we’re excited to start with a compelling Spanish-language service targeted to the Hispanic community,” said Paul Guyardo, DIRECTV chief revenue and marketing officer. “We’ll learn a great deal, use the findings to grow and improve the Yaveo platform and expand our OTT offering over time.”
Yaveo first made headlines in September, when DIRECTV CEO Mike White discussed plans for the new product at the Communacopia media and telecommunications conference. It could be only the first of many online niche products offered by DIRECTV, according to White.
